Hazel Fern Pohlman, daughter of Jesse F. and Hattie B. (Davis) Chedester, was born on September 11, 1919 at her parents’ farm near Soldier, IA. She entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, November 3, 2015 at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, IA at the age of 96. Hazel attended country school near Soldier and graduated from Soldier High School. She then attended Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, IA.
On May 18, 1939, Hazel was united in marriage to Howard E. Pohlman at her parents’ home. To this union five children were born: Connie, Harold, Gary, John and Nancy. When Hazel and Howard were first married they lived on a farm near Blencoe, IA, then they rented various farms in Monona and Woodbury counties. In 1947, they bought the car dealership in Ute. In the mid 1950’s, they started farming again along with running the dealership. In the mid 1960’s, Hazel taught school for a few years. In 1973, Howard had an accident that forced him to retire but Hazel continued helping on the farm. They made their home on the farm until 2009 when they moved to Onawa. Since May 2013, Hazel has made her home at Elmwood Care Centre.
Hazel was a faithful Christian and a member of the Ute United Methodist Church until it closed then she joined the Charter Oak United Methodist Church. She was very active at the Ute church teaching Sunday school and being a member of the UMW. Hazel was a member of the Jordan Sunshine 4-H Club in her younger years and then became a 4-H leader in later years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and reading. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family.
Hazel is survived by one daughter, Connie King of Onawa, IA; three sons: Harold (Lissa) Pohlman of Mason City, IA, Gary (Judy) Pohlman of Soldier, IA and John (Lynette) Pohlman of Ames, IA; six grandchildren: David Pohlman, James (Peggy) Pohlman, Matt (Dawn) Pohlman, Paula Pohlman, Jessica Pohlman and Erika Pohlman; four great grandchildren: Miranda and Grant Pohlman and Rosmina and Joseph, Jr. Garcia; two brothers-in-law: Clarence (Donna) Pohlman of Hillsboro, OR and Eldon Wiese of Mapleton, IA; one sister-in-law, Marta Kerley of Oregon; and many nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends.
Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard on August 22, 2013; one daughter, Nancy Ann Pohlman; one son-in-law, George King; one brother, Roland D. Chedester; and six sisters: Audrey (Clem) Martindale, Shirley (Delaine) Buter, Marjorie (George) King, Lois (Grant) Gallagher, Lola Chedester in infancy and Joan (Bob) Chamberlain.
