Gale Harold Volk, son of Harold Volk and Janet Evanson, was born March 16, 1947 in Madison, WI. He entered into eternal rest on Saturday, November 15, 2014 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, IA at the age of 67.
Gale attended grade school in Middleton, WI and graduated from high school in Wausau, WI. Following high school, he attended an electronics trade school in Chicago for one year then enlisted in the United States Army. During his military time, Gale served as a mechanic in Colorado until being honorably discharged on May 21, 1971.
Gale moved to Oto after his uncle died in a farming accident to help operate the farm and take care of the family. Gale continued with the farm operation for several years then began commuting to Omaha where he worked as a Federal Fireman at Offutt Air Force Base until retiring in 2010. In recent years, he worked primarily out of the Hornick Post Office as an assistant postmaster and a fill in.
Gale was very active in the American Legion especially with his local post, Leslie F. Seaton American Legion Post 0666 – Smithland, IA. He served as Post Commander and led the annual Memorial Day services. He also was a member of the Oto Fire Department and served as an E.M.T. Gale had a special love for his dogs and horses. He enjoyed doing electronic repairs, running his caterpillar, collecting large military vehicles, and taking care of his acreage west of Smithland.
Gale is survived by his mother, Janet Evanson of San Diego, CA; his brother, Gary Volk of San Diego, CA; his sister, Ginger Markey and husband Craig of Missoula, MT; cousins; other relatives; and special friend and caregiver, Opal (Nelson) Scoggins of Hornick, IA.
Gale was preceded in death by his father, Harold Volk in 2000.
